Guide: Packing For Summer Travel

Hot off the heels of our European vacation, we thought it wise to give guidance on what to pack for your upcoming summer travel plans. After 2 weeks of being constantly on the go in a foreign country in the early summer heat, we sort of feel like experts now. How do you pack for these types of trips? Here is our guide to packing lightly for your trips away!

The Basics

No matter how long your trip is, there are a few much needed articles of clothing you should always remember to pack.  Boxers and socks are among the top most needed items. If you have the chance to do laundry while you're away, you can cut the number you bring. Most people will be shocked when they hear socks, but what about when you're going to a nice restaurant for dinner? Plus, they can help keep your feet warm when you're inside relaxing after a long day at the beach.

On the topic of socks, don't forget at least two pairs of shoes.  The style may vary depending on where you are going and what plans you have. It is recommended to take a pair of loafers and then a more casual pair (like drivers), that you can still walk in if needed and are appropriate for those nights out.  If you know you're going to be doing a lot of walking or sports, pack a pair of athletic shoes.

If you are traveling to the beach, or somewhere warm with a pool, don't forget your bathing suit, towel and sunscreen!

Every Day Wear

Casual Shirt For Night TimeNow if you're going to the beach, your clothing needs are pretty limited to your bathing suit during the day but for the times you're not at the beach, you'll need regular clothing. A pair of classic chinos or other style trousers or jeans are perfect for dinners and to wear around during the cooler nights. You'll also want to take at least one pair of shorts for daytime wear. As for shirts, don't forget at least one nicer shirt such as a polo or a button down. T-shirts are good for daytime (and getting sunscreen on), but not as nice when you're heading out to dinner. A sweatshirt is also a good option to bring with you for those cold nights at the beach. They also come in handy if your significant other gets chilly!

Avoiding Over Packing

This might seem like the obvious piece of information about packing for vacations, and especially when heading to the beach.  Most people generally overpack to make sure they have enough options for anything that could happen. Don't be afraid to wear things more than once. Those chino's you wore to dinner one night are still acceptable to wear a second- or third- time!

Not mentioned in the basics everyone should pack are your toiletries.  The essentials include: toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant.  Depending on where you are staying, you might also need to pack some shampoo and soap.  Coordinate with other people you are traveling with to cut down on bringing duplicates of items.  You don't want to be lugging around a heavy bag in the heat!  If you forget something at home, chances are you will be able to buy it at your destination or you'll find you didn't need it after all.  Safe, happy and relaxing travels!
